Many
years of experience and knowledge in technology lead me to research and build
the show control system I choose to use now. Unlike the
other designers for theatre productions, high end costly audio and digital equipments
are necessary for a complicated sound design. Typical studio editing system is
not possible to be brought to the theaters during tech week. A carefully planned
sound design sequence is highly dependent on the experience of good sound operator
to achieve successful result. It is difficult for the stage manager to control
the consistency of a complex design. Most sound designers don't get as much pay
as the other designers; efficiency and cost reduction are must to allow a successful
sound designer to make a living designing for theaters. This season, I have tripled
the total number of sound designs as well as the complexity of the design with
my systems.
After
extensive researching among the available technology and software, I selected
the SFX software for my show control system. The software are incorporated in
many on/off Broadway productions. Their software are also used in many
Universities as well as Theme parks such as Sea World, Paramount Parks, Universal
Studios, Busch Gardens, David Copperfield, The Blue Man Group, and etc.
I
select the best computer hardware to increase the efficiency and ensure operation
reliability of my design. With my system, I am able to work with the lighting
designer closely to offer more complex design for the director and the design
team. The designed sound level and control are set and run exactly every show.
There is no need to burn CDs time after time. It saves time and reduces cost for
my design. Often, simple edits can be done during tech and help the director and
design team making quick decision and enhance the production efficiency.
My
system also simplifies the cue calls for the stage manager. The
sound and lighting cues are combined as the sound control and lighting
control are connected via MIDI devices. Other devices such as video,
DVD, smoke machine, and etc can be controlled by the system as well.
Fewer technical staff is required to run the show; as a result,
it reduces the operating cost for the theater production.
The
Music Lesson sound design, operated by my show control system, won me the second
San Francisco Bay Area Critics Circle Award in 2002. So far, nine Bay Area theaters
have used my system at twelve venues: Marin Theatre Company, Magic Theatre Company,
A Traveling Jewish Theatre, Napa Valley Repertory Theatre,
San Jose Stage Company, A.C.T. conservatory, Alternative Theater Ensemble, Contra
Costa Musical Theatre, and Center Repertory Company.
Total operating cost in ten-thousands has been reduced for the theaters because
of my systems. A theater uses my system for their entire season can reduce their
total season sound budget by 40% to 60%. My show control system can be leased
with option to purchase. I am also the authorized West Coast dealer for the SFX
software, ranging from $495.00 to $1,195.00 depending on the audio playback and
show control features.
Over
one thousand performances have been operated by my systems. The following productions
using my system are currently running in San Francisco Bay Area now. Please check
them out if you are interested in learning more about my system. A demo
can be arranged depending on the system availability.
